Denison Magazine

Denison Magazine Spring 2009The newest edition of Denison Magazine, entitled “Crossing Boundaries, has just been released, and, as usual, has some interesting articles about past Denisonians.

“An ongoing study — a dialogue, even — of the human condition, and humankind’s relationship with everything non-human, through a lens that is academically influenced, culturally savvy, civic minded, and socially conscious,” you can check the Spring 2009 edition online or, if you’re one of the lucky student or alumni, read it yourself.

The website itself is slick, and the ability to download individual stories as PDF files makes the online browsing experience much nicer. There’s a blog too, check it here.

Front Page Ads @ New York Times

Jan 05, 2009 in Advertising, Broadcast, Publication

In an effort to cut costs and raise a bit of revenue, The New York Times is deciding to print front page advertisements.

Though running front page advertisements is virtually unheard of amongst the country’s most prominent newspapers, the Times — along with almost every other publication out there — has seen a significant drop in ad revenues as a result of recent economic turmoil.

For the sake of newspapers papers nationwide, go the NYT.com, click on some banner ads and check out the article.

SkyMall’s Finest

Dec 15, 2008 in Advertising, Publication

On the 8 hour flight back from London, I found myself in a desperate situation — with an iPod on low battery and having forced myself through The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2 and A Journey to the Center of the Earth, I needed something to bring me back to reality (and certainly a break from bad Brendan Frazier movies). This is when I discovered SkyMall.

The Indoor Dog Restroom / $149.00

The Indoor Dog Restroom

That tagline mnight as well read: “Did you buy a dog and realize you weren’t ever going to be around to take care of it? If so, buy this green thing for it to piss on.” Little known fact - this product works just as well for humans.

The 40′ Marshmallow Bazooka / $49.95

40′ Marshmallow Bazooka

Only in SkyMall will you find the 40′ Marshmallow Bazooka. Though I was initially excited by this breakthrough in modern weaponry, I was a bit disappointed to read that the bazooka can only launch 5 marshmallows per minute. How on Earth are we supposed to protect ourselves with marshmallows if the damn thing isn’t at least semi-automatic? Maybe if the bazooka came with some sort of toasting mechanism to shoot flaming marshmallows…

SkyMall is genius. It’s a catalogue full of random, semi-practical appliances and other crap that, after watching two really bad Brendan Frazier movies, can make you feel like a human being again.

Vanity Fair Does It Again

Oct 08, 2008 in Politics, Publication

Over the summer, Vanity Fair published a magazine with a cover that spoofed The New Yorker. Recently they published another spoof cover of InTouch Weekly with John McCain on the front. It seems everyone is getting in on the fun by making jabs at the presidential candidates. The New Yorker spoof is here.      johnmccainoutoftouchcoverawardsmarkpasetsky11.jpg ————————————————————————————————————-
