Peace, Love and Harmony… Literally.

Apr 30, 2009 in Culture, Music

Music truly is a universal language, and “Playing For Change” has demonstrated that by attempting to bring together our vast world through a series of intercultural songs. As they travel around the globe, numerous musicians contribute to the same song and create a flowing entity to promote peace, love and harmony throughout our world.

“Playing for Change is a multimedia movement created to inspire, connect, and bring peace to the world through music.”

Not only is the nonprofit corporation growing by the day, but the random musicians incorporate from each country are getting their 5 minutes of fame. The first performance, a rendition of Stand By Me is my favorite:

“Be Your Own Best Healthy Self”

Apr 10, 2009 in Advertising, Culture, Music

dovegirls2_img_assist_custom.jpgStacy Nadeau is a nationally renowned speaker, a college graduate from Depauw University, and a “Dove Girl.” Now, eight years after Dove’s Campaign For Real Beauty began, Stacy Nadeau travels the United States speaking about her own beliefs in regards to “Real Beauty.” One of the campaign’s most successful trademarks was its effort to reach out to real women as well as simply talk about them. For example, this past week Stacy traveled to Denison University in the middle of the Midwest to talk to an auditorium full of listeners about the trials and tribulations that go into any advertising campaign.

In particular, Stacy and the 5 other Dove Girls have been “chewed up and spit back out” by the media more than any other models because of the extremely unique approach they took to selling a simple product like Dove Lotion. Even four years after the first ad with all 6 women was shown, Stacy said that she still receives mixed reviews by journalists who either love or hate the huge efforts she puts into discussing female bodies.

For more information, she has created her own website that acts as a branch off of Dove’s greater campaigns: StacyNadeau.com

Master of Arts or Master of Deception? The Shocking Truth Behind Our Most Beloved Professors

Feb 19, 2009 in Culture, Music

Mark on DulcimerHave you ever wondered what your professor’s do “off the Hill?”

Though some may see their professors at the local coffee shop, drinking Chai and discussing Postmodern literary theory alongside a clamoring group of students and bearded townsfolk, the Romanticized scenario of your favorite scholar burning the midnight oil next to a mountain of pencil shavings and ungraded papers, smoking their corn-cob pipe and listening to John Coltrane may be a lie.

While it may be hard to believe, some of our most beloved professors lead dark and mysterious lives outside the classroom.

Behind his sly smirk and those big brown eyes lies the mind of one of the nation’s foremost Hammered Dulcimer players…or so he’d like us to think. What you didn’t know was that Visiting Professor of Music, Mark Alan Wade, is a criminal mastermind.

As a nationally accredited champion of music, Mark Alan Wade is better known as a musical prodigy than as a master of deception. In fact, Wade has been using the hypnotic tones of his Hammered Dulcimer to lull unsuspecting people into a life of treachery and carnage for years now. Preying on the naive, the insecure, and the generally fragile, Wade’s genius and ambidextrous fingering capabilities put him on a level all his own.

A little reconnaissance work brought us to Wade’s personal website where he waxes poetic about his wizardry of the occult.

With “a mastery of the subtleties and finesse of Celtic Airs and Chopin Nocturnes…Mark’s audiences are drawn into a broad spectrum of emotions that his music evokes.”

Need more proof? Take a look at what Mark Alan Wade doesn’t want you to see, and why his top secret plan to take over the world stops here.

At first glance, it’s as if this group of women performing the theme from the 1984 box office smash “Beverly Hills Cop,” are actually enjoying themselves, but to the more discerning eye, it becomes clear that these women have been brainwashed by the soothing tones of “Axel F.” It’s been years since these women were seen, or heard from again.

Now living in Granville, it looks like Wade’s chosen another group of naive, insecure, and fragile people as his next victims: Denison students.

Warner Music and YouTube Split

Dec 23, 2008 in Advertising, Arts, Broadcast, Culture, Music, Web

“No More Warner Music on YouTube” - Techtree.com / 22 Dec. 2008

Warner YouTube

Warner Music demanded that thousands of its music videos be removed from YouTube. Unable to reach fair liscencing agreements for its artists, songwriters and publishers, Warner Music Group artists like Madonna and Metallica account for more than 1 billion YouTube views. Since the conception of digital music, the licensing dispute has become the predominant dispute between the two worlds. Click image for more information.

It’s That Time In November Again

Nov 04, 2008 in Arts, Music, Politics

It’s Election Day 2008. I figured we could enjoy some music videos that have been for both Obama and McCain. The first comes from will.i.am from The Black Eyed Peas and his song “Yes We Can.” The second music video titled “The Mac is Back” was released from the McCain campaign. They are interesting videos and I thought I could share them with you on this historic day. I Hope you enjoy them.

MTV launches Website…Just For Music Videos

Oct 28, 2008 in Advertising, Music, Web

In my years that I watched MTV I saw a rapid decline of music videos being aired on the network. I always remember when MTV was strictly about playing music videos. This was before the reality television era that we are currently having to live with. Well, we are in luck. MTV, like NBC’s hulu.com, is starting a website solely for music videos. The website is mtvmusic.com. They have some very cool ads like the one below. I think it is great for music video lovers because it allows for fans to see many of their favourite artists and their videos. Anytime you turn on MTV, you are likely to see some fake reality show. This website brings music back to MTV.

Straight No Chaser

Oct 15, 2008 in Music

Indiana University’s all-male acapella group, Straight No Chaser, has decided to reunite. Ten years ago these ten men created the acapella group that still exists at Indiana University, and now these original founders have come together to reestablish their musical roots and broaden their horizons to the greater world of iTunes and record labels. The original members of SNC have signed a deal with Atlantic Records and produced an album entitled “Holiday Spirits” that will be released on October 28th. Watch them here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Fe11OlMiz8

Denison Student On His Grind

Oct 02, 2008 in Music, Politics, Web

Are you passionate about hip-hop and politics? If so, check out Hiptics.com, a student-run blog with entrepreneurial aspirations.

A junior at Denison University, Chris Franco created Hiptics in June of 2008 as an extension of his popular WDUB radio show, “From the Underground Up,” which featured his “favorite hip-hop music as well as hip-hop and political commentary.”

Although Hiptics has only been around for a few months, Franco makes content a high priority by setting “high standards for posting.”

…Did Lil Wayne miss his court date because of a dentist appointment? I could care less. What I do care about is the caliber of hip-hop music being released in the underground and mainstream, and how that music is impacting the world.”

Along with album reviews, news and videos, Hiptics offers audiences socio-political editorials voicing the opinions of a once-deemed “silent” generation. Oh yeah, Franco’s blog also has an arsenal of intelligent writers and a small (but growing) list of affiliates. Adamant on “developing the Hiptics brand,” it looks like this Denisonian has been doing his homework.————————————————————————————————————————————

Phish Comes Back

Oct 01, 2008 in Music

Legendary 1980s jam band Phish, comprised of Trey Anastasio, Page McConnell, Mike Gordon, and Jon Fishman, is making a return to the concert scene for the first time since August 2004. The infamous quartet has decided to reunite after their four year break and experimentation as solo artists. Next March they will be appearing in Hampton, Virginia and tickets go onsale mid-October. They broke apart after playing over 1000 concerts together and have not all been together since. In March we will see if a once-worshipped band can still maintain their status as highly talented musicians with an ability to contribute to the greater entertainment industry.
